Violins: Samuel Gilkes, c. 1800

Samuel Gilkes is one of the more famous English makers from the latter part of the 18th century to the early part of the 19th century. Unlike many English makers from that period Gilkes used the Stradivari pattern along with the Stainer model. This violin is from the former pattern and as a result has a clear, warm tone and is not nasal at all. The condition is fabulous.
