Carolyn Field Violin, 1993

Carolyn Field (b.1926, d.2016) was born in Houston, Texas and began musical studies early in life. In the late 1970s her beloved cello was damaged and in an effort to repair it, she became a pupil of well-known luthier Carleen Hutchins. Field eventually opened her own workshop and used high-quality maple and spruce to produce beautiful and meticulously handcrafted violins, violas, and cellos.

Field worked as a luthier for several decades and her work is unmistakably clean and refined. This violin is in perfect condition and reflects many of the aspects Field adopted during her training with Carleen Hutchins. As with all her instruments, Field was particular about creating a playable piece with a balanced tone that was as durable as it was aesthetically pleasing.
