This beautiful cello labeled “Gigli” is a fine sounding 150 year old instrument in excellent playing condition. It has no sound post racks or bass bar cracks and has that wonderful “old world” look and feel.

Giulio Cesare Gigli (b.1724, d.1794) was born in Rome and at about 14 years of age he went to live and apprentice with his uncle, famed luthier Michele Platner. Gigli eventually inherited his uncle’s workshop, materials, and tools, and continued producing instruments for several decades. His work reflects aspects of both the Amati and Tecchler models.

Gigli violins were crafted in a heavier style, while his cellos are typically Roman and highly valued. This beautiful cello is in excellent playing condition and retains a fine tone, and large, radiant voice. Its lovely Old World look and feel is accentuated by warm hues of antique varnish. Gigli instruments are still in demand and highly prized by professional soloists.
