Lawrence LaMay Acoustic Bass 1974

Lawrence LaMay (b.1922, d.1980) was a bow and violin maker who studied in Indiana and Chicago and went on to work in Texas before establishing his own shop in Madison, Wisconsin, around 1959. There he made an array of about 200 instruments and bows that have been coveted by discerning players.

This acoustic bass is modeled after Amati and was built in 1974. Warm hues of the golden varnish showcase the wood’s natural form. Fine-grained spruce and flamed maple tonewoods are gorgeous and lend an amazing sound to this modern masterpiece. It is in excellent condition and eminently playable, ready to accompany one of our many bows to produce a rich, balanced voice.
